Lost in Translation
I started playing Nightfall when it came out and went directly into RP to learn the combat system and various aspects of the game. However, about last week my curiousity couldn't take it anymore and I went to build a PvP-only toon. I had grasped about all I could really as far as the basic system goes, as it isn't all that complicated. But there is alot behind all the skills and how they work with each other as well as with other classes that only experience and me looking off you guys' homework will teach me.
Anyways, I now find myself more on the pvp side more than anything. So I came here tonight to check out skills again, builds, class discussions, etc. And I see there is advice for newbs here but there is a problem. The terminology. I run across things like PUGing, 'spiking', 'blackout', etc. And I am thinking WTF are you talking about? I thought this was info for noobs rememb0rz? Hehe. Is there like a terminology reference page I can use so these guides will make sense that anyone is aware of? I haven't been able to find one yet and have been hunting through sticky threads for about 10 minutes now and don't know what to search. I did find the nifty GWFreaks site though. If you also know of anything else that may help me come out of my noob cocoon I would appreciate it. Thanks. |

Guildwiki usually has definitions for common slang in GW. It's been down a bit lately due to server load, though, so good luck getting on for another few days. I tried to link to the terminology page on wiki (I'm pretty sure it exists), but I can't connect.
PUGing=pick up group. usually people that don't know each other and are just advertising for players in Team Arenas (TA) or Heroes' Ascent (HA). Spiking=Doing lethal Damage in a very short time frame in an effort to prevent the other team's monk from saving the spike. Some spikes use additional skills to shutdown an monk, such as gale, blackout, shame, or diversion. Blackout=a mesmer touch skill in the domination line. If you need any help in game message me, I'll try to help you out. GW PvP is pretty complicated to get into, I reccomend starting in Random Arenas and working your way up to TA, and then GVG. If you find you like it, you can always do HA as well. Also, iQ's site rocks really hard. This site, as much as I love it, gets pretty sidetracked as far as discussions go. |

Wow, thanks for all the feedback. I had been trying to get onto guildwiki last night but thought it was down. I ended up just letting the browser load when I went to bed because I forgot it was still up, and it is there now.
I will have to look at the sites you all have referenced for me. I have been running through random arena for about a week with my paragon. But a couple days ago I was on a team and someone announced they had 'ss' on them, which I had no clue what it was and kept attacking - because I figured, I couldn't remove it. The team was rather cool about my getting us all killed. But I really want to familiarize myself with the system. I went into team arena and don't think it is a good idea for me to go into yet as I am not even familiar with common builds yet. I have mostly been just running RA to learn basic playfield behavior. But I think now, I have learned all I can without having to know builds and setups. I have a hard time spotting the other team's weakness and always assist the tank, or assist the guy(s) that seem to know what they are talking about in team chat. Thanks for the links and information everyone. I appreciate it. Also, I may as well ask now, is HA and HoH the same thing? If not, what is the difference? Muchos Gracias. |

Technically, however, Hall of Heroes is the last map, where you win favor; Heroes' Ascent refers to the entire process toward getting there. <--can be wrong sometimes :P I've done HA but never gotten to HoH |
